Work Record One

·       Contact sheet

·       Straight images (as many as you wish to post)

·       AO1: Develop ideas through sustained investigations informed by research and other sources.
·       My main research influence was Ben Heine whose series called 'Pencil vs Camera' relates directly to what I would to produce as a response to the exam. The series blends his artwork with photography by using a frame within a frame. This allows for the focus to be on the artwork but still links to the rest of the photo.
·       Ben Heine's Pencil vs Camera

·       The second photographer that researched this shoot in-particular was Florence Henri as her work with reflections and mirrors is what influence me into controlling the frame to there for control the subject of the image. With Florence Henri's work she used the mirror to control the subject but the mirror was also the frame meaning that her frame and subject were under her control. This works with my plans for this shoot as I want to control both frame and subject but my frame does not control my subject.

·       For my response to the exam I want to create a series of composite images in which one contains a frame and the other contains a subject, using photoshop I will then combine the two allowing the frame image to only loose the area within the frame and then the subject image to be within that frame.

·       AO2:
·       I first started by selecting the area inside the frame and then deleting it so that the area contained nothing. To insure that the area was actually deleted I had to make sure the original photo was not set as the background layer as otherwise it would have just been white rather than empty completely.

·       I then used the patch tool to remove the red light on the left. I did this by selecting a black area with the tool and the drawing over the red light. This replaced the area with a the black.

·       I then brought in the subject image. Put it a layer below the frame image so that it came through the frame. I then transformed the image using command + T so that it would be smaller and fit more through the frame so that the viewer can understand what the subject image.

Finally for I used the brush and eraser tool to make the frame more clean and clear.

For this image I first started by selecting the centre of each frame and deleting it in the same way as the previous image. I then went on to crop the image so that the frames were larger allowing the image to seen properly.
I then went on to decide on what three images I wanted in each frame.

With these three image I added them into photoshop one by one. Transforming each and adjusting there layer position so that they were behind the frame image.

Finally for I used the brush and eraser tool to make the frame more clean and clear.

This image was edited similar to the last. I first selected the centre of each frame and deleted them, whilst making sure that the original photo layer was set as the background.

I then decided on what images I wanted in each frame.

Then I dragged each into the frame image within photoshop. I made sure that they were below the frame image layer and then transformed them so that they fitted in the frame better.

Finally for I used the brush and eraser tool to make the frame more clean and clear.

For this image I am going to use similar editing process but varying in the image used at the end. Due to the shape of the frame I will be using a landscape image rather than the portrait images used previously.

I started with selecting the inside of the frame and deleting it. Also adjusting the layer so that it was not the background layer allowing for the inside of the frame to be entirely empty which lets the image behind it show through and appear through the frame.

Then I chose the landscape image I had and placed it in photoshop.
I then went on to transform the photo to be smaller and then rotate it so that it appeared within the frame more. I had to make sure that the subject photo layer was behind the frame photo layer.

Finally for I used the brush and eraser tool to make the frame more clean and clear.

With this image I started by selecting the area within the long exposure frame. I then went on to create a new layer via cut of the selected area. I then set the original layer as not the background, as by default the first original image is set as the background, I had to set the layer as just a normal layer because when the area within the frame is deleted I need it to be a blank area, if there is a background layer it defaults to having white there instead of nothing. After setting the layer as a background, I then deleted the cut layer. This created a frame with no background inside it (see below)

My next step was too add the image to go within the frame. I chose the image below.

The steps after are quite simple. I dragged the image into the photoshop document and made sure that the new image is below the original image layer.
This has to be done so that the image is only seen through the frame as there is nothing there in the original image layer.

I then did some minor adjustments to the image, transforming it so that it was the right size to be seen properly through the frame. (see below)

I also added some minor adjustments to the visuals of the image by adding a curves adjustment layer and applying only to the subject image. The adjustment is only minor but allowed the photo to look more part of the image as a whole.

Finally for I used the brush and eraser tool to make the frame more clean and clear.

This photo's editing process is similar to the last. I want to experiment in making the subject image much brighter and have a higher contrast to link to the idea that the grass is always greener on the other side.

I started the same as the others by selecting the area within the frame and creating a new layer via cut. I then set the original image layer as a normal layer instead of the background and then deleted the cut layer. This made the inside of the frame completely blank. (see below)
I then selected the image I wanted to have within the frame (see below)
I then dragged the image into photoshop and made sure the new layer it was on was below the frame image layer.

I then transformed the image so that it was smaller and fit within frame and also moved the image to change what was seen through the frame.
I then added a curves layer to experiment with the colours within the subject image. I made sure that the curves layer was only altering the subject image.

I then went on to add a brightness and contrast layer so that I could experiment with making the image look better than reality.

Finally for I used the brush and eraser tool to make the frame more clean and clear.

With this image I want to use a curves layer to make the subject image blend more with the frame image.

I started first by selecting the area within the frame and creating a new layer, I then made the original first image layer as a normal layer rather than a background. Then I deleted the cut layer, which created an blank area within the frame. (see below)

I then went on to choose what image I wanted within the frame.

I then dropped the image into the photoshop document. I then changed the layer order so that it is a layer below the frame layer, this is so the image comes through the frame.

I then went on to move the image so that the section I wanted was shown through the frame. I also had to transform the image so that it was smaller and allowed for the full section to be shown.

I then went on to add a curves layer so that the image blended more with the frame image. I applied the image only to the subject image.

Finally for I used the brush and eraser tool to make the frame more clean and clear.
For this image I again want to use a curve layer so that it so that it blends more with the frame image.

To start I selected the insides of the long exposure frame. I then created a layer from this selection via cut. To remove the insides and create a blank area I had to set the original frame image layer to a normal layer instead of the background. After I had done that I simply just deleted the cut layer. Which created a frame with a blank area inside of it. (see below)

I then chose the image I wanted within the frame.
I then dragged the image into the photoshop document. I made sure that the new layer that was created for this image was below the original photo image so that it came through the frame

I then moved and transformed the image so that the section I wanted came through the frame.

I then wanted the subject image to blend more with the frame image so I used a curves layer and applied it only to the subject image.

Finally for I used the brush and eraser tool to make the frame more clean and clear.

I first started by selected the area within the long exposure frame and creating a new layer of the selection via cut. I then set the original image layer as a normal layer as the background so that when the cut layer is deleted it is just blank inside the frame. I then deleted the cut layer which created a blank area inside the frame.

I then chose the image I wanted to be inside the frame.

I then dragged the image into the photoshop document and made sure the layer it had been placed into was below the original frame image layer.

I then moved and transformed the subject image so that the section I wanted was being shown through the frame.

Finally for I used the brush and eraser tool to make the frame more clean and clear.

I started by changing the frame image layer from the background layer to a normal layer.
I then went on to select the area I wanted the frame to be
I then created a new layer via cut from the selection
I then deleted it so that the selected area was blank
I then chose my subject image
I then added the image to the photoshop document, and changed it so that it was a layer down from the frame image.

I then dragged it and rotated it 180 degrees so it fitted within the frame and was upside down.

AO3:
(Reflect critically on your work and progress, (evaluate the images you have produced in what way do the images link to your initial plans/the exam paper… )

I believe that my images relate well to the exam question. The long exposures work as a framing device as they are the main light source they are the brightest part of the image meaning they are the focus of the image. The frame also allows for any image to be placed inside of it. The series also relates to the 'Pencil vs camera' series by Ben Heine as it creates a frame and places an image inside of it, the images do not link to the outside image but still the concept is still similar.
